Feel the Colour® Cushion Cover - Blue & White
Feel the Colour® - literally. You can see the design of this cushion with your hands. Each colour has its own texture: the white is smooth, the soft turquoise fluffy and the stronger teal is ribbed. The names of the colours are hand embroidered onto each section in braille, so the design of the cushion can be read entirely through touch. Don't read braille? Not to worry, each cover comes with a label with the braille alphabet so you can work out what it spells.
All fabrics for the cushions were handwoven using the same colour warp yarn to ensure everything ties together. The fabrics were then washed to achieve the desire finished texture, cut and sewn together into the different designs. The final steps were embroidering on lots of French knots to create the braille and adding the zip.
The idea for this design came about during a regional project that championed Swedish wool and wanted to highlight its many qualities. One of the things I love about wool is how tactile it is, so I wanted to do something with that. I wondered if it would be possible to design something that through the use of touch and imagination, would enable visually impaired people to experience the design in their own way, making the design available to a group that's often not considered when it comes to home decor. (Many lose their sight later in life and therefore have memories of colours.) The result is the Feel the Colour® collection.
The cover fits a generously stuffed 50x50cm inner cushion and has a practical zip closure for easy removal of the inner cushion.
(Please note, inner cushion is not included.)
On the cushion covers listed and pictured, the colours are spelled in Swedish, but they can of course be customised to a language of your choice. In fact, the Feel the Colour® cushion covers can be made to order in size, language and colours of your choice. Please get in touch to get the ball rolling!
